Giving back is a core Signature, Inc. principle, and we are always looking for new ways to make a difference in our community and beyond. We also understand that it can be very difficult to find the right cause to support. In our estimation, the biggest problem is that too many companies and business leaders give with their hearts rather than their heads.
One recent study showed that about 60 percent of the nearly $350 billion worth of time and effort donated to charity every year in the U.S. is backed by solid research. Only three percent of people who gave to nonprofits reported that they compared groups in any real way before making their donations.
We at Signature, Inc. believe this is because most nonprofits use compelling stories to attract donations. This is all well and good, but it also means that charities without tidy narratives to share with potential donors often get left out in the cold.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a good example here, because for all the good it does for children facing deadly diseases, it isn’t the most efficient charity in the world. If you were to do some digging, you would find that every wish costs around $7,500 to grant. By contrast, the Against Malaria Foundation can save two kids’ lives with about $6,000. Unfortunately, it receives much less attention and fewer donations.
